Wojciech Kobyliński
EDUCATION IS A RIGHT, NOT A GOOD!
We protest against the project for the strategy concerning the evolvement of the higher education that assumes the institution of general student fees, worked out by the headmaster sector.
The crucial majority of Polish students contradict the solution mentioned above.
It's true that higher education is underfunded, but the idea to solve this problem by burden the students is not acceptable. High running costs are for multiple, financially worse-off persons a barrier that efficiently bar from starting this education free of charge. There are no doubts that the introduction of student fees will definitely lead to the reality in which only those are able to study who can financially afford this. In a democratic country there should be no place for such restrictions for entering education from the economical site! The crucial fact for matriculation should be the knowledge, not the prosperity of the relative person.
Another scandalous proposal is the idea to replace scholarship with academic credits, because it creates spheres of additional disparity by forcing the poorer into default right at the beginning. While constructing more and more looming of the effectivity of such solutions we want to remember that also the existing system of academic credits should work wonders. Finally it turned out that not more than a few percent of the students were able to use an academic credit.
A modern, democratic state emphasise great value on science and education. Treatment of this subjects presumes priority to invest into. Countries, that are clear about this are able to take credit from the results in form of a strong economy, an active civil society and a developed technology. For this reasons we have to enhanced the public investments for higher education.
We are really appalled at the headmaster sector's approach to this problem. We challenge, if deputies of the higher education power watch the public interest. The treatment of a university as if it would be a company reminds us more on the behaviour of a “businessman in aristocratic clothes” than a deputy of respectable headmaster profession.
Against the academic cadre of Polish universities that distanced themselves form the acceptance of a resolute position in cause of the social problems, under them the problems of the commercialization of universities, the phrase “a university of silent professors” were used several time ago. But we hope that there is at least a part of this sector for that the ethos of the dedicated intelligent who takes care of the public property.
The permanent general insurrection of the academic sector in Austria at this time, that is a component of a further global movement, were started currently with the occupation of the ballroom of the Vienna academy of arts by professors. That's why we appeal to the academic cadre to support similar by Polish students guided activities.
Democratic student associations will enforce their activities concerning more resolute student strikes and protestations for the purpose of defence of the current existing in parts free of charge access to education, as well as for the purpose of the fight for the actual general public and the gratuitousness of access to higher education in Poland.
