ANNA BRAKONIECKA
Hello, I’m Anna, but you can also call me Ania. I lead the Scholar-online team and I am a miracle worker. You are cordially invited to join me on the journey of the Scholar-online project.
I originally come from Poland. I like meeting new people and my secret wish is to drive an F1-car.
My friends gave me the nickname “Störungsquelle” (which is the German for “source of interference”), because I would often ask them: “May I interrupt you for a sec?”. I express my creativity in a chaotic way and I always make sure boredom is kept at bay.
At the moment I’m often on the move, because I’m setting up this project together with my team.
I hope you like it.
I’m one of the best examples of European integration. My German odyssey began when I took part in a program organized by the Pommerania Euroregion* to promote cooperation between the Polish high school J. Lukasiewicza in Police and a German high school in Löcknitz. The student exchange was validated with both a German Abitur and a Polish Matura, which made my access to the German university education system via ZVS [the organisation in charge of admissions to German universities] very easy. I completed my degree in business at the Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany, and then started working in Germany (in Nuremberg and then in Leipzig).
I helped launch many projects for children (the international project-days for schools kids in Saxony). I held a tutorial about private law for foreign students at the Chemnitz University of Technology and I presented Poland during the “Polish evening” and also during the “bazaar of cultures”. In the last few years I have successfully worked on many very different tasks in marketing and sales for companies like Lufthansa AirPlus, BMW, Megware, ReTecCom, etc.
* A Euroregion is a transnational cooperation structure between two or more contiguous territories located in different European countries.

JERZY BRAKONIECKI
Jerzy, also called Jurek, is my brother and he is also a glutton for work. At the moment he’s studying business administration in Szczecin and helps our father in the small family buisness.
Jurek avidly follows Formula 1. Ever since Kubica started driving for the BMW-Team, Jurek has been keeping his fingers crossed for the Polish sportsman.
He loves riding his bike. He developed a very individual riding style. Not even all his accidents managed to keep him off the saddle. Respect!
Otherwise Jurek likes everything sweet or that comes out of our mother’s kitchen. But he is not a mama’s boy. He is very direct. Even if he sometimes disagrees, he is like a musketeer: one for all and all for one!

OLGA KATS
Olga grew up in the Far East. So she knows what a really cold winter is. She moved to Germany with her parents a few years ago.
She likes travelling, especially to Italy or Israel. She doesn’t have a secret wish, but still there are three wishes to be fulfilled this year. We found them out, according to the tradition, on the Russian New Year’s Eve.
Olga studied in Leipzig and still likes talking about the state of the international economy.
Olga doesn’t like drinking juice, but prefers Earl Grey and of all fruits she likes grapes and bananas best. And sometimes pomegranates. She sings along to Madonna’s songs, but she doesn’t know much by Céline Dion. Fortunately she laughs a lot.

RITA BEGER
As a student of a Wirtschaftsgymnasium in Görlitz, she sometimes felt the Polish wind blowing from the East.
Rita is sporty and enjoys volleyball the most. She has experienced success not only as a coach, but also as a player. She also enjoys riding her racing bike. She even studied sports alongside buisness. A tough combination, which she completed successfully.
Rita is a true entertainer. She loves trips to the cinema, photo-sessions for the Children`s Day and Salsa-rythms. Her favourite colour is red. Fire at will!
Otherwise Rita likes After Eight ice cream and makes a very good leek and bean casserole.

HEIDI MEIßNER, geb. ZENKER
Our discussions until the early hours about politics, philosophy and history gave us a little break from the stress of exams. Since then Heidi finished her degree successfully and she now leads a team in a small PR-agency in Munich. Everybody is very satisfied with her work, because Heidi is always in a good mood and always up for a laugh.
In times of crisis, she drinks cherry-banana tea and listens to loud and hard music. Most people have pets; Heidi though shares a “car-pet” with her husband Andreas - a plush Garfield.

MANDY SANDMANN UND SEBASTIAN BÖHME (UND FYNN)
Mandy’s love for languages started as early as high school. Besides English and French, she studied more unusual languages like Latin and Hebrew. Later, during her training as an international tourism assistant she also studied Spanish, which she improved during a ten-week stay in Andalusia.
Sebastian discovered his love for languages a little later than his partner, namely during his professional training. He studied English and French when he was at school, and Spanish during his training.
They met each other on a vacation organized by a mutual friend. They soon discovered that they belonged together. After following the same training as tourism assistants they went to Ireland to start working. They actually planned to stay longer on the green island. But a little more than a year later a baby was on the way. That’s why they both decided to come back to Germany. Now their world revolves around little Fynn. A wedding is also planned but the date is not set yet.
Along with her jobs as Mummy, housewife, partner and translator, Mandy also works part-time for an event-agency, where she does the research. Sebastian is once again looking for a new job, but already has something in sight.

CLAUDIA KEILIG
Claudia Keilig is a specialist translator and a specialist of Islam. She settled in Berlin as a freelance translator in 2008 after staying in Israel, Syria and India for her job for some time.

ARA MKRTCHYAN
Ara is a qualified specialist translator for German-English from Bern. Born in Armenia, he moved to Switzerland to further his training and since then worked as senior translator and editor, as translation project manager and as specialist for software localisation. He takes part in this project voluntarily as an English editor.
He likes Armenian food, loves languages, greatly enjoys looking after his large plants, and…his scrambled eggs are the best.

CHAVVA SCHNEIDER
Chavva is the “Text-witch” and also a “nit-picker”, a bean counter, a typo devil. Besides she is an acrobat with words and a little talking fish (only a little one, because she thinks that there are people who can speak many more languages much better than her).
She was born in Cologne in 1970 as the daughter of a Turkish father and a German mother. Her mother’s family is mixed Protestant-Jewish and is from Berlin and before that from Poland. She learned a little from every religion (strangely she knew most about the Catholic faith, because she grew up in the very catholic Rhineland, where everyday life is influenced by the “catholic culture”, even if most people are not very strict in their belief…) This led her to the opinion, that everybody believes in (the same) God and that, if He is as we believe, she doesn’t have to speak a certain language and she doesn’t have to go to a certain house, when she wants to talk to Him. This is one of the most important lessons in her life: knowledge means everything, knowledge is the condition for tolerance!

JOANNA CHUCHLA
This is Joanna, also called Asia, our future star. Her career has been going slow so far because she has been focusing on raising her son Dawid (a proud 6 years old).
Asia is friendly but down to earth and conscientious. Sometimes sarcastic. And always honest. Sometimes ready to take a risk, like that time when, not speaking a word of German, she travelled with her then four year old son from Szczecin to Nuremberg on the Deutsche Bahn, and managed to reach her destination after four changes. It is hard enough travelling with a child at home, but she pulled it off with brio in a foreign country. Even when a woman was trapped in the train door (which still brings back frightful memories to an otherwise carefree Dawid).
Her secret wish cannot be said out loud, or it won’t come true.
Her creativity sometimes bubbles up to the surface when she does manicure or makes flower bouquets.

THOMAS SCHLENDER
Thomas holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Translation and Communication Sciences with focus on Technical Translation. He did his degree in Flensburg, where he is currently working as a freelance translator. He has already gained experience as a Technical Translator in several different companies. He is also an in-house teacher of technical English. He did a semester abroad at Portsmouth University in England and played on the University’s basketball team there.

VERA KOBRINSKAYA
Vera is a friendly, very hard-working student from Leipzig. As she is good with languages, she decided to do translating and interpreting.
Besides Russian, she can speak German and English and works in this field as a freelancer.
She has got a child, a husband and two cats. She likes languages, literature, good movies, sports and travelling.

MAGDA PIOTROWSKA
She studied political science at the Silesia University in Katowice (Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach). She is about to have her viva for her degree thesis on roman philology. She is working in a company specialized in producing so-called “due diligence” reports and is responsible for the English and German speaking regions.
She seizes every opportunity to widen her experience in the field of Polish-French translating and interpreting and is very motivated by it, because she loves everything that has to do with the French language and its specific features. She wants to continue developing in this field in the future. She just loves France!
Whenever she has the opportunity, she likes spending her free time in the mountains.
She got married in April [in Polish you would say: she went getting married] and still hasn’t come back [little funny reference from us to the literal meaning of the wedding] ;) She is expecting a baby.

ELENA HECKEL
was born in Kazakhstan and came to Germany in 2000. She studied International Cultural and Business Studies in Passau.
Elena has a son and lives with her family in Munich.
She is interested in other languages and cultures, film and photography. She settled in Bavaria very well and goes to the Oktoberfest every year wearing a pretty Dirndl (a traditional southern Germany dress).

NADIA BALHI
Nadia grew up and started her engineering studies in France. After spending a few months at Bristol University in the United Kingdom as an Erasmus student, she enjoyed it so much that she caught the expatriation bug and moved back to Bristol after finishing her degree in Poitiers. After several years of studying and working, she moved again, this time to Hamburg in Germany.
Nadia is preparing for her Diploma in Translation exam which will take place next January. She lives next to the beautiful Alster river, where she indulges in her passion for rowing with her team in the eight (a long and narrow racing shell with eight rowers and one person doing the steering and the motivating).
Getting eight women to work together in perfect synchronicity is not easy but every time the miracle happens, it’s fantastic!

KATARZYNA KALA
Katarzyna has been living in Germany for 5 years and at the moment she is in Karlsruhe. She initially trained as a teacher. Now she is also a translator. She did Linguistic and Cultural Studies in Gemersheim, at the Johannes-Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germany.
She is looking for a job in her field and she dreams to be a journalist. She would like to write a book at some point.
With an insatiably restless spirit, she doesn’t stay very long in one place. She loves travelling, and the farther the better. She likes riding her bike and going swimming. She has an interest for Indian food, psychology and Far Eastern philosophy. At the moment she is also into photography and in-line skating.

NINA FRANK
Nina was born in Krasnoserskoje in Russia and did her degree in foreign languages at Novosibirsk State University. She was a guest student at the Otto-Friedrich-University in Bamberg and graduated from the Institute of Foreign Languages and Foreign Studies at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. She likes it very much in Bavaria (in Franconia actually). She is in charge of translating into Russian for our project in the section “We are Europe”. Otherwise she works for the Russian-speaking newspaper Bamberger Prawda and is a certified translator.

MAGDALENA PITULA
Magdalena was born in Wroclaw in Poland and came to Germany with her family when she was a little child. She studied English, French and Polish at the University of Mainz in the Faculty of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Germersheim. She finished her degree successfully last year and is now a qualified translator. She is working as a freelance translator at the moment.
